Tool Methodology:

This tool allows users to visualise the best US cities for runners. The interactive table ranks cities based on several factors that impact outdoor running and exercise:


  • Green Space: per capita number of public parks and gardens in each city, based on The Trust of Public Land data.
  • Traffic: based on the 2020 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard impact rank which is a calculated commute based upon a city’s population and the delay attributed to congestion.
  • Pollution: average air quality score over 5 days from the 19th of July 2021 to the 23rd of July 2021 taken from www.airnow.gov
  • Running Events: per capita number of running and outdoor exercise events listed on runguides.com, recorder on the 21st of July 2021.
  • Crime Rate: the official crime rate data was taken from all relevant US government bodies. The number refers to all crimes, excluding fraud, in each city.
  • Overall: the overall ranking was calculated by taking the above metrics in considerations and attribute a score to each city. The higher the score for each metric the higher the ranking it is for the city.
